Small Group--Table Activity Summary
High Priority Short-Term Areas to be Addressed for E-Learning
- Survey faculty and student e-learning needs and satisfaction with current e-learning courses
- Encourage dissemination of "Best Practices" of e-learning with fellow KSU faculty
- Faculty development with both technology and the pedagogy of e-learning (i.e., during fall faculty work week introduce interested faculty to WebCT training in the KSU computer labs, to pedagogical concepts of e-learning)
- Establish a WebCT "hotline" for faculty to receive instructional help when in need
- Provide better computer hardware in classrooms
- Faculty need time to develop and implement e-learning courses (course release &/or incentives)
- Provide incentives to faculty in form of recognition of e-learning work through service to dept/university, T & P, & bonuses
- Need better access of e-learning courses to out-of-state students (i.e., remove residency requirements)
- Clarify intellectual property issues with faculty development of e-learning courses
- Establish e-learning course development teams-professor (content), pedagogical specialist, and tech specialist
- Review which courses are appropriate for online delivery by each department/college
- Heighten faculty awareness to the resources and level of usage of e-learning that is occurring at KSU
Resource Implications for E-Learning Development
- A central entity & location coordinating e-learning efforts at KSU which includes information & tech resources, instructional design, web design, implementation of process, & evaluation (quality check)
- Increased allocation of resources-monetary and personnel to further promote e-learning:
- Establish an e-learning University faculty fellow
- Part-time faculty to cover release time
- Funds earmarked for online course development
- IT personnel devoted to e-learning-"Web Rangers"
- Tech & pedagogy training through formal courses such as the BOR program
- Creation of a University "core group" of faculty & tech specialists to assist first-timers with e-learning
- Seminar/round-table on intellectual property policies with establishment of e-learning courses
- Creation of e-learning course development teams for each college that consist of discipline expert, tech expert, and pedagogy/instructional design expert
Implementation of E-Learning Issues
All groups agreed there needs to be a University push for the emphasis of e-learning that occurs from the top-down.
